A toast, and back to work
Champagne came out in the visitors’ clubhouse in Houston. Nobody got soaked. The Atlanta Braves clinched a playoff berth Friday night with a 6-2 win over the Astros, raised a glass, and moved on.
That reaction tells you where this team thinks it is. Atlanta has locked up at least a National League wild card and trimmed its magic number in the NL East to three. The division is the actual target, and it sits close enough to touch.
“We’ve got our eyes on bigger and better things,” Michael Harris II said. “We’re trying to win the East. So got to go out there and do what we know we can do and hopefully we can celebrate big for that.”

Three swings, three two-run homers
Harris, Ronald Acuña Jr. and Matt Olson each went deep with a man aboard, Acuña in the seventh. That was the offence in full, and it was plenty.
The win also stopped a wobble. Atlanta had dropped two of three to the Chicago Cubs earlier in the week, which gave Friday weight beyond the standings. Philadelphia losing 6-3 to the Mets on the same night stretched the Braves’ lead in the East to five games with eight to play. The division could be settled as soon as Sunday.
Number 90 landed too. Friday was Atlanta’s 90th win of the season, the fifth time in the last eight full campaigns the club has reached that mark. Only the Dodgers, with eight, and the Brewers and Yankees, with six apiece, have done it more often across that stretch.
Why the mood stayed flat
Last season explains the restraint. Atlanta went 76-86 in 2025 and finished fourth in the NL East, ending a run of seven straight postseason appearances and six consecutive division titles from 2018 through 2023. That earlier run included beating these same Astros to win the 2021 World Series. Watching October from home does something to a clubhouse.
Walt Weiss is the man steering the return. He spent eight seasons as Brian Snitker’s bench coach before taking the job this year, and he pushed the credit away fast.
“Everything you get in this league is earned,” Weiss said. “Great group, what they’ve overcome this year, and hopefully some bigger celebrations ahead.”
A seventh NL East title in nine years is on the table if Atlanta finishes the job. The Phillies have eight games left to stop it.
