He was eight when he walked into Augsburg’s academy. Eleven years later, that detail decided an international tug-of-war.
The German federation confirmed on Friday that Noahkai Banks will represent Germany. The 19-year-old defender has closed a US recruitment file that had been open for well over a year. His mother is German, his father American, and he was born in Hawaii, but the family moved back to Germany when he was a baby and he never left. His entire football education happened in a country he knows far better than the one on his birth certificate.

Pochettino was still waiting on an answer last week
The Americans had the head start. Banks wore US colours at the 2023 U17 World Cup and got a senior camp call in September 2025. As recently as last week, Mauricio Pochettino said he was still in contact and still hoping.
Antonio Di Salvo, who runs Germany’s U21 side, described a recruitment effort that had been running quietly for a while. “We had been in contact with both of them for some time and had focused our efforts on them,” he said. Both, because Banks was not the only name announced: German-Tunisian forward Louey Ben Farhat went the same way.
“I am very happy that we were able to set out a path for their future in Germany and that they have bought into it,” Di Salvo added.
Thirty-five appearances, one goal, and a long runway
Banks is in his third professional season at Augsburg. The raw output is slim so far: 35 games across all competitions, a single goal. Nobody is pencilling him into a senior Germany squad tomorrow.
What Germany have bought is time. The federation has made a habit of tying down dual nationals early and letting them develop in the youth setup for years. The US side of the equation reads differently. A centre-back already being trusted with Bundesliga minutes is not something their pipeline produces every season.
