NBA: Keyonte George lands $157.5m Jazz extension

Five years, $157.5 million

Utah drafted him 16th. Three seasons later the Jazz have handed Keyonte George a five-year extension worth $157.5 million, a deal several US outlets broke on Friday. That works out to an average of $31.5 million a season for a guard who turned 22 in November.

It is a rookie-scale extension, agreed before the contract he signed after the draft ran out. Utah now has its starting point guard locked in for the rest of the decade. No restricted free agency headache next summer either.

The shooting splits that made this deal happen

George posted 23.6 points, 6.1 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.1 steals across 54 games last season. He started all 54 of them.

The real jump came somewhere else. He set career highs at 45.6% from the field, 37.1% from three and 89.2% at the line. His 134 made threes ranked third on the roster.

A guard who hits close to 90% from the stripe and dishes more than six a night changes how you build an offense. Utah waited for that profile to hold up across a full season before paying for it.

From No. 16 pick to franchise money

A late first-rounder in 2023, no guarantees attached. George answered fast, earning a spot on the NBA All-Rookie Second Team as a rookie.

Three seasons in, he is averaging 17.2 points, 5.3 assists and 3.4 rebounds over 196 games with 133 starts. That 23.6-point mark in 2025-26 is still his career best.

Utah’s cap sheet just got tighter

The Jazz are still grinding through the rebuild that followed the Mitchell-Gobert breakup. Draft picks came in by the handful. Sure things did not. George is the first one.

What comes next around him is the harder question. The deal squeezes the salary picture for several years and cuts the room Utah has to maneuver in free agency. The Jazz have made their call.
