Europa League: Palace’s 4-0 buys Pierre Sage some breathing room

Ten minutes to flip the mood at Selhurst Park

Foot Mercato had run the story two days before kick-off: friction between Pierre Sage and the Crystal Palace board, the kind of report that puts a manager on the clock.

Then Pino scored in the 10th minute.

Richards made it two on 27. Strand Larsen buried a penalty on 34. Lech Poznan were three down at half-time and had nothing to offer after it. Nketiah tacked on a fourth in the 89th, by which point the Polish side had long stopped resisting.

Four scorers, zero conceded, on a night that broke others

Palace did not need a moment of individual brilliance here. They needed four different players to finish, and got exactly that.

Around them, the Europa League produced its usual chaos. Juventus put five past NEC Nijmegen. Celtic were beaten 3-1 at home by Ferencvaros. Torreense, a Portuguese second-division club, won at Lillestrom. Marseille lost 4-1 at Besiktas. Against that backdrop, a tidy 4-0 reads better than it might on a quieter night.

Three points do not settle a boardroom argument

Sage got the scoreline a manager under scrutiny wants. Whether it changes anything upstairs is a separate question, and nobody around Selhurst Park is pretending otherwise.

Premier League football returns at the weekend. That is where the questions come back.
