Jessica Shepard finished with 13 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists. The assist number is the strange one.
Triple-doubles stay rare in a league that plays 40-minute games, and rarer still when the dozen assists come from somebody operating out of the post. Dallas beat the Los Angeles Sparks 97-77 in Arlington overnight, the WNBA’s first action since August 31 after the FIBA World Cup break. Paige Bueckers led the Wings with 19.

Three weeks off, and the streak survived
Five in a row now. The run began before the league went dark and came out the other side intact, which was no safe bet for a roster that shipped several players out to national teams for the tournament.
The playoff spot is already banked. Four games left, and the only thing still in play is seeding.
The Sparks never solved the ball movement
Twenty points is not a close game. Los Angeles spent the night chasing Dallas passes around the floor and arrived late to most of them. Shepard’s dozen assists are the tell: when a defence has to collapse on a big who can pass, somebody on the perimeter ends up alone.
Four games left to climb. The rest of the conference is playing at the same time, which is the part nobody in Arlington controls.
