La Liga: Barcelona sweating on Joan Garcia after knee scare

Nine goals, and everyone is talking about a knee

Barcelona put seven past Racing Santander on Wednesday night. Nobody in Catalonia woke up Thursday thinking about the goals.

Joan Garcia never came back out for the second half. The keeper had gone over on a strip of ground inside the stadium with no grass on it, and his right knee took the whole thing. He was replaced, and the mood changed in about four seconds.

“Minor discomfort,” which tells you almost nothing

The club’s medical note landed Thursday. Minor discomfort in the right knee, they said, with availability depending on how it settles.

Translation: no return date, and nobody is offering one.

Seville on the weekend looks out of reach. So, most likely, does Luis de la Fuente’s Spain squad, which is announced tomorrow. The realistic target is October 10, when Barcelona are back in action against Getafe.

The timing is the problem, not the injury

Nothing here suggests a long absence. That is the good news, and it is where the good news stops.

Barcelona are perfect so far this season and now travel to Seville, one of the few trips in Spain that can genuinely go wrong. Doing it without your first-choice keeper is not how anyone drew it up. Doing it because a patch of ground inside your own stadium was not properly maintained is worse.

For Garcia, chasing a first real look from La Roja, the timing stings twice.
