Football: Burchkalter named FIFPro general secretary

From the Africa desk to the global one

Buenos Aires, last week. FIFPro’s world council met and handed its administration to a Frenchman. Stephane Burchkalter is the new general secretary of the global union for professional players.

He is no stranger to the building. Burchkalter was already deputy general secretary, and at the same time he ran FIFPro’s Africa division, where he held the same title. The step up puts him in charge on the global stage.

France tightens its grip on the game

Burchkalter also heads the legal department at UNFP, the French professional footballers’ union. His appointment adds another French name to the top table of the bodies representing players.

David Terrier is already president of FIFPro Europe, while also leading UNFP. He welcomed his compatriot’s arrival. “This appointment is a huge source of pride for UNFP, and fully deserved recognition,” he said.

Workload, welfare, contracts: the file is already thick

FIFPro brings together national player unions from around the world. The organisation fights the issues that keep cropping up on the international calendar: workload, player welfare, contract protection.

Burchkalter is stepping into a high-pressure job.
