Two games in the opening set, and the top seed was gone
Diane Parry is out. The Frenchwoman, seeded fourth in Guadalajara, was beaten on Tuesday in the second round by American Peyton Stearns, 6-2, 7-5. Her run in Mexico ends here.
Stearns had the match under control from the start. She gave Parry two games in the opening set. Parry put up more of a fight in the second, without ever truly getting back on level terms. Stearns closed it out 7-5.
Parry had arrived in good form after the Mexican swing. She won in Monterrey a few weeks earlier, a title that earned her top billing in this draw. Her ranking put her fourth among the seeds. None of that mattered on Tuesday.

Stephens awaits Stearns in the quarter-finals
Stearns now faces an all-American quarter-final. She meets Sloane Stephens, who beat Indonesian Janice Tjen on the same day, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3).
That one was tight throughout. No break of serve in the first set. In the second, Tjen served for it at 5-2 and earned two set points. Stephens dug out of trouble, then broke back to level at 5-5. Two tiebreaks decided it.
The numbers leaned the wrong way for the American. Stephens faced the only two break points on her serve and dropped both. She managed two aces, against eleven for Tjen. The 2017 US Open champion is through anyway.
The rest of the draw
The other two second-round results went to form. Czech third seed Sara Bejlek saw off American Alycia Parks 6-4, 6-3. Spain’s Cristina Bucsa, seeded sixth, beat Hungary’s Panna Udvardy 6-4, 6-4.
In Sao Paulo, Latvian Darja Semenistaja ended a run of nine straight main-draw losses by beating Japan’s Hayu Kinoshita 7-5, 6-4. She had already fallen in the first round at Wimbledon and the US Open.
