Ligue 1: Lille draw record Chinese TV audience

Thirteen million people watched at least a minute

That second number is the one worth holding onto. The headline figure, the one the league will quote, is 2.15 million average viewers on CCTV-5 for Lille against Troyes. China’s state sports channel has not carried a bigger Ligue 1 audience this season.

The gap between 2.15 million and 13 million says plenty about how the match was consumed. Watched, flicked away from, come back to. It travelled a long way past the hardcore football crowd.

A national channel changes the maths

French football has been chipping away at this market for several seasons. Getting onto a channel with genuine nationwide reach is what moves the numbers into a different bracket.

Timing did not hurt either. Lille won at home on Sunday and went top of Ligue 1. A side leading the table sells abroad in a way a mid-table one never will.

The LFP now has a number to sell

Overseas audiences feed directly into what international TV rights fetch. Every point gained in China ends up priced into the next round of negotiations.

The Premier League remains a long way ahead here. Still, 2.15 million is something concrete for the league’s sales team to put in front of a buyer.
