Two tie-breaks, one break of serve
Sloane Stephens beat fifth seed Janice Tjen 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3) on Tuesday in Guadalajara. The opening set produced no service breaks at all. Tjen then served at 5-2 in the second and held two set points. Stephens took that game, broke back to level at 5-5 and closed out another tie-break.
The numbers pointed the other way. Tjen hit 11 aces to two. She converted both break points she earned on the Stephens serve. The American still walked off with the match and a quarterfinal place.
Stephens won the US Open in 2017. Her run at this year’s edition ended against Marta Kostyuk.

Stearns removes the fourth seed
Peyton Stearns beat fourth seed Diane Parry of France 6-2, 7-5 and lines up against Stephens next. Two seeds gone from that section of the draw, two Americans left standing in it.
Third seed Sara Bejlek of the Czech Republic knocked out Alycia Parks 6-4, 6-3 in the other second-round matches, and sixth seed Cristina Bucsa of Spain saw off Hungary’s Panna Udvardy 6-4, 6-4.
Semenistaja halts a nine-match slide in Sao Paulo
Ninth seed Darja Semenistaja beat Japan’s Hayu Kinoshita 7-5, 6-4 at the rain-delayed SP Open for her first main-draw win in ten attempts. The Latvian had lost nine in a row, a run that included opening-round exits at Wimbledon and the US Open, both of which she reached as a lucky loser from qualifying.
Armenia’s Elina Avanesyan beat Argentina’s Julia Riera 6-2, 6-4. Serbia’s Teodora Kostovic downed Brazil’s Victoria Luiza Barros by the same score. Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska got past Italy’s Lucrezia Stefanini 6-3, 6-4.
