John Konchar agrees a deal with the New York Knicks

NBA: Knicks agree terms with free agent John Konchar

A veteran name off a thinning market

John Konchar has agreed a deal with the New York Knicks, his agent George S. Langberg of GSL Sports Group told ESPN on Tuesday night. The 30-year-old forward enters his eighth NBA season.

Konchar was among the most experienced players still unsigned at this point of the calendar, with more than 360 regular-season games behind him. That number matters more than it looks. Free agents still available in mid-September are usually either very young or very short on minutes, and a player with six full seasons of rotation work is a rarity on that list.

He spent the first six of those seasons in Memphis before a midseason trade sent him to Utah. Across 26 games for the Jazz last season he averaged 5.9 points, 3.0 assists and 5.7 rebounds.

The roster maths in New York

The Knicks carry two open spots, and sources indicated Konchar has a strong chance of filling one of them when the final cuts come. New York also plan to sign centre Drew Eubanks to compete for a place.

Neither move reshapes a rotation. Both address the same problem a contender faces every autumn, which is depth that can be trusted for ten minutes in January without the defence falling apart. Konchar’s line in Utah is the giveaway: 5.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists against 5.9 points is a profile built on everything except scoring.

What comes next

Training camps open shortly, which is why this market is moving now rather than in July. Konchar arrives to compete, not to be handed anything, and New York will settle the roster edge before the season starts.
