Five more years at Stade Rochelais
Ronan O’Gara has signed a contract extension that keeps him at La Rochelle until 2031. The head coach joined the Top 14 club in 2019, and the numbers explain why they wanted the signature rather than the succession plan.
Before O’Gara arrived, La Rochelle had never won a European trophy. Under him they won back-to-back Champions Cup titles in 2022 and 2023, having lost the final the season before that. Three consecutive Champions Cup finals is a run only a handful of clubs on the continent have managed. He has also taken them to two Top 14 finals.

What the coach said
“My family and I are very happy and very proud to continue this adventure with Stade Rochelais,” O’Gara said. “We have experienced exceptional moments and weathered some more difficult times together. In each of them, I felt the club’s confidence and the support of our fans.”
He framed the extension as unfinished work rather than a reward. “I deeply believe in this club, its players, its staff, and its ambition. We have already built a lot, but I am convinced that the best is yet to come. I want to continue to develop this team and win with Stade Rochelais.”
Signed from a position of strength
The timing matters. La Rochelle have won both of their opening fixtures of the new Top 14 season and sit third, one of only three sides in the league still unbeaten. Extensions negotiated in that context tend to cost a club less goodwill than extensions negotiated in November.
The length is the striking part. A deal running to 2031 covers the 2027 World Cup in Australia and reaches the 2031 edition, which puts O’Gara beyond the window in which most high-profile club coaches are linked with international jobs. La Rochelle have effectively removed themselves from that market for the rest of the decade.
For a club that was competing in the second tier of French rugby as recently as 2014, tying down the coach who delivered its first continental titles until 2031 reads less like a contract renewal and more like a statement about where it now expects to sit.
