NFL: Jaxson Dart and the clock bury the Cowboys 28-20

Thirty-six minutes and 40 seconds of the ball

Dallas got two possessions in the entire second half. Two. That number explains the New York Giants’ 28-20 win over the Cowboys in East Rutherford last night, in both teams’ opener.

Jaxson Dart threw for 230 yards and three touchdowns, going 23 of 29 and adding 54 yards on the ground. It was John Harbaugh’s first game on the Giants sideline, and the former Baltimore head coach, a Super Bowl winner there, ran the script he likes best: keep it, grind it, hand it back late.

Isaiah Likely caught eight for 78 yards and two scores. Cam Skattebo ran 18 times for 81 yards and a touchdown. Devin Singletary turned a short pass into a 9-yard score to end the final drive.

The interception that swung it

The defense made the play of the night. With 49 seconds left in the half, Jevon Holland picked off Dak Prescott while sliding, both feet just inbounds, at the New York 45. Twenty-nine seconds later Dart hit Likely for 15 yards. 14-7 at the break.

New York took the second-half kickoff and went 74 yards on 12 plays, eating 8 minutes and 1 second. Dallas answered with 12 plays and 75 yards, capped by a 1-yard Javonte Williams run. Then the Giants went back to strangling the clock: 13 plays, 65 yards, 8 minutes and 11 seconds.

Prescott finished 22 of 34 for 175 yards, two touchdowns, that interception. Williams scored twice, CeeDee Lamb once. On the last Dallas touchdown, Williams taunted safety Tyler Nubin. The flag pushed the two-point try back to 48 yards, and Brandon Aubrey missed wide right. Two points gone in a game decided by eight.

Nabers is back, and a streak flips

Malik Nabers caught six passes for 69 yards. First game back since he tore his ACL and meniscus in his right knee, 11 and a half months ago.

One more number they will enjoy in New York: the Giants have now beaten Dallas twice in a row after losing 16 of the previous 17.
