Five runs up before the second inning was over
San Francisco never had a grip on this one. Five down before the second was finished, and that was the ballgame. The Padres won 6-4 in the Bay and completed a three-game sweep.
It started fast. Fernando Tatis Jr. and Dustin Harris opened with back-to-back hits off Logan Webb. Jackson Merrill drove them both in with a double. 2-0 after a handful of pitches.
Tatis went again in the second with an RBI single. Then Manny Machado put his 27th homer of the season into the seats for two more. 5-0.
Webb was pulled after five, charged with six runs on eight hits. Seven strikeouts on his line, which by then meant nothing.

Devers out for the year, and a bullpen that shut the door
Earlier in the day San Francisco confirmed Rafael Devers is done for the season with a core injury. For a club sitting at 62-88, the timing was cruel.
The Giants still swung back. Andrew Knizner hit his second homer of the year to make it 5-2. Christian Koss got busy after that: a single, two stolen bases, a run in the fifth, then an RBI single in the sixth. 6-4, and a pulse.
San Diego’s bullpen ended it. Wandy Peralta, Randy Vasquez and Yuki Matsui covered three and a third scoreless. Matsui struck out Jonah Cox with the tying run aboard for the second save of his career.
Both teams finished with nine hits. With runners in scoring position, San Diego went 4 for 10 and the Giants 2 for 13. Everything else was noise.
Two and a half games, two weeks left
Seven straight wins now for the Padres, who sit at 81-68. They lead Arizona (79-71) by two and a half for the third and final National League wild card spot.
Two weeks to go. No lead in September is safe, but this one changes how every remaining game feels.
One more line worth keeping: Ethan Salas, 0 for 15 since his major league debut, finally got a triple.
