Football: Ecuador hand the job to Marcelo Gallardo

“Welcome, Marcelo”

The Ecuadorian federation posted in Spanish on Monday morning. “We have the talent, the structure and the ambition. We are ready.” Then two hashtags: #LaNuevaEra, #LaEraGallardo.

Marcelo Gallardo is Ecuador’s new head coach. Official. At 50, the Argentine takes charge of a national team for the first time in his career.

“We went after Marcelo Gallardo for what he has won, but above all for what he stands for. Welcome to Ecuador, Marcelo,” said federation president Francisco Egas.

Fourteen trophies at River Plate

Fourteen. Two of them Copa Libertadores, one a Copa Sudamericana. That is the line on the CV that convinced Quito.

Gallardo knows European football from the inside too, having played for Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain before he went back to Argentina and rebuilt River from the bench. His one venture into the Saudi Pro League, at Al-Ittihad, did not last.

He replaces Sebastian Beccacece. Sacked. The 2026 World Cup ended in the last 16 for La Tri, beaten 2-0 by Mexico. For a squad that believed it could go deeper, the hammer came down fast.

Ecuador carry that odd profile: a talented generation, modern football, and a ceiling that never cracks at the right moment. The federation is betting silverware will smash through it.

Club coach, national job, different animal

Moving from club football to the international game is not the same work. Gallardo loses the daily sessions, the constant control, the ability to fix something on a Tuesday. He gains short camps and players scattered across three continents.

Plenty of elite club coaches have come unstuck there. Others found a second wind. Nobody knows yet which camp he lands in.

One thing is clear. Ecuador did not hire a manager. They hired a reputation.
