NFL: Zay Flowers hits 150 yards by halftime, then pulls up

Two quarters, 150 yards, a career best

Zay Flowers did not need a full game. The Baltimore Ravens receiver had 150 receiving yards by halftime in Indianapolis, more than he had ever managed across four quarters.

It started on Baltimore’s opening snap. Lamar Jackson hit Flowers for 49 yards, then walked the drive in himself from five yards out. The second quarter produced the highlight: Flowers came across from the left, reached back for a Jackson throw four yards behind the line of scrimmage, spun upfield and ran away from the entire Colts secondary. Fifty-four yards, touchdown.

Then the hamstring, with six minutes left in the half

Catch number five was the one. Sauce Gardner brought Flowers down hard, and the receiver stayed on the turf with a hand on the back of his left thigh. Baltimore called it a hamstring and listed him questionable to return.

Six minutes still on the clock in the second quarter. A player in the middle of the best half he has ever put together, walking off it.

Baltimore is already counting bodies

Flowers was not the only one to go. Cornerback T.J. Tampa left in the first quarter with a knee injury.

Hamstrings are the injury receivers dread. They linger. They flare up again weeks later. They strip away the burst that makes a player worth building an offense around, which is exactly what Baltimore has done with Flowers on the outside. The Ravens are waiting on tests before they say anything more.
