Serie A: Coulibaly double as Lecce hold off Monza 3-2

Twenty-one minutes, three goals

Lecce beat Monza 3-2 this afternoon at the Via del Mare. Coulibaly opened the scoring in the 3rd minute. Tiago Gabriel added another in the 10th. Coulibaly struck again in the 21st.

Monza never had a chance to settle.

Ricardo Mangas had pulled one back in the 20th, between the home side’s second and third goals. It meant little at the time.

A finish that was anything but calm

At 3-1 after 21 minutes, this looked done and dusted. It wasn’t.

Monza dragged themselves back to 3-2 through Zeballos in the 89th minute, and Lecce had to survive the closing stages and stoppage time with a one-goal cushion and very little composure left. They held on.

Coulibaly’s second goal changes the whole feel of the game. Without it, Lecce face that final stretch at 2-2.

A striker who does not wait

Lecce had already won 2-0 at Venezia earlier in the season. The Apulian club are building their campaign on this kind of fixture, the sort where the opponent is there for the taking and three points are non-negotiable.

Coulibaly took two of them inside the opening 21 minutes. A forward who scores that early, twice, is not something a Serie A season serves up often.

For Monza, it is a grim read. Two away goals, a comeback alive until the 89th minute, nothing to show for it. Those opening 15 minutes cost them the result, and conceding three times before the half-hour in a league this tight makes the job almost impossible.
