Cole hit hard again in the Bronx
Gerrit Cole lasted 4 1/3 innings overnight and left with the game already gone. The New York Mets took him for five runs on nine hits, three of them home runs, in a 12-2 win at Yankee Stadium.
Francisco Lindor, Luis Torrens and rookie Carson Benge each went deep against the right-hander. Cole struck out four and walked nobody, which is the strange part of the line. He was not missing the zone. He was missing bats, and the Mets did not waste the chances.
This was his second short outing in a week. Last Sunday in San Diego he gave up four home runs. Saturday’s start matched his second-shortest since he came back from Tommy John surgery on May 22, and seven home runs allowed across two appearances is the kind of number that follows a pitcher into October conversations.

Lindor finishes it with the bases loaded
Lindor came back up in the eighth with the bases full and cleared them. The grand slam turned a comfortable evening into a rout and gave the Mets their widest margin of the series.
Zac Thornton did the rest. The rookie right-hander went seven innings, matching a career high, and allowed two runs on five hits to improve to 4-5. Seven innings from a rookie in the Bronx in mid-September is not a small thing, and it let New York’s bullpen sit down for the night.
A very different team since the deadline
The Mets have won five of their last six. More telling is the longer run: 22-13 since they sold at last month’s trade deadline, a stretch that has quietly repaired a season most people had written off when the veterans started leaving.
For the Yankees, the timing is worse. They now sit four games behind first-place Tampa Bay in the American League East after the Rays edged Houston 3-2 on the same night, and their rotation question is no longer theoretical. Cole has been the answer to that question since 2020. Right now he is part of it.
