Pittsburgh Pirates rookie Esmerlyn Valdez placed on the injured list with a hamstring injury

MLB: Pirates lose Esmerlyn Valdez to a hamstring

A ground ball in the sixth

Esmerlyn Valdez ran out a routine grounder in the sixth inning in Chicago on Friday and pulled up. Pittsburgh placed him on the 10-day injured list a few hours ago with a left hamstring injury.

The game itself had long since slipped away. The Cubs won 12-2 in the opener of a three-game series. Losing a 22-year-old right fielder to a leg injury somewhere in the middle of it is the part Pittsburgh will still be turning over.

Ronny Simon comes up from Triple-A Indianapolis in the corresponding move. The 26-year-old second baseman went 9-for-32 across 10 games with the Pirates earlier this year, a .281 average drawn from a sample too thin to argue with in either direction.

Seventeen home runs in seventy-two games

Valdez reached the majors this season and took National League Rookie of the Month for July. The line now closes, at least for the moment, at .232 with 17 home runs and 47 runs batted in across 72 games.

The batting average tells one story. The power tells a louder one. Seventeen homers in 72 games comes out at one every 4.2 games. Run that rate across a full 162-game schedule and it lands near 38. The contact has been inconsistent all year. The damage, when he connects, has not been.

Forty-seven RBIs from a .232 hitter says the same thing from a different angle. He has not been on base often, and he has hurt pitchers when he has been at the plate.

What ten days really means

Ten days is the minimum stay. Hamstrings rarely honour the minimum, and with the regular season winding down the practical question is how many games, if any, Valdez has left in 2026.

The cost here gets measured in development time more than in standings. Pittsburgh wanted these last weeks to keep finding out what a 22-year-old with 17 home runs turns into. They get Ronny Simon instead.
