One big-league start, and straight back to Toledo
Andrew Sears got five and two-thirds innings in the majors, then a bus ticket back to Triple-A. Now Detroit wants another look. The left-hander comes back up from Toledo to start game two of a three-game home set against Colorado, carrying an 0-1 record and a 4.38 ERA in the big leagues. He has never pitched against the Rockies.
That one start came on September 4 against Cleveland: one run, four hits, no decision. The Tigers optioned him out the next day. “I felt good. I was back in my routine, back in my comfort zone,” he said afterward.
He also works fast, and he leans into it. “It keeps hitters on edge. They want to use the clock against me. As soon as they look in, I’m going.”

October is off the table, so the kids play
Detroit dealt a two-time Cy Young winner last month and let go of the playoff race not long after. What followed was a full handover to the young roster, and the Tigers have taken four of their last six.
Kevin McGonigle is closing hard on American League Rookie of the Year. Max Clark put a solo home run into the seats in Friday’s 6-2 win, then reached again after getting plunked, swiped second, and came around on a pair of wild pitches. “When you see him running full tilt, that’s elite speed,” A.J. Hinch said.
Sears has gone 3-2 with a 2.16 ERA across 16 minor-league appearances this year, 12 of them starts, and his target is a rotation spot out of spring training. His manager sounds convinced. “He deals with the moment and the responsibility,” Hinch said.
Five straight losses and nine men left on base
Tanner Gordon (1-4, 5.40) takes the ball for Colorado, his 10th start of a season that has also included 12 long-relief outings. St. Louis roughed him up on Sunday: five runs, eight hits, four and two-thirds innings. Against Detroit he owns an 0-2 record and a 10.24 ERA across two starts.
The Rockies arrive on a five-game slide. They put 10 hits together on Friday and stranded nine runners doing it. Zac Veen, in off the bench in the seventh, knocked in the ninth-inning run with an infield single.
