NFL: Commanders cut D.J. Humphries two days before the opener

Sixteen days in, then out

Signed on August 26. Cut on September 11.

Washington waived D.J. Humphries on Friday, two days out from its season opener. The 32-year-old offensive tackle never played a snap in a Commanders jersey.

He had been brought in as an emergency fix. Laremy Tunsil, the starting left tackle and a five-time Pro Bowler, tore his triceps in late August and landed on injured reserve on August 31. That left a hole on the blind side and a line that needed patching in a hurry.

Washington would rather find out about Brandon Coleman

Humphries was supposed to add depth. The staff has gone another way.

Brandon Coleman, a third-round pick in 2024, is expected to start at left tackle on Sunday in Philadelphia against the Eagles. A young player thrown straight into the fire, on the road, against a division rival. Washington would rather bet on him than on a veteran who walked in two weeks ago and still has not caught up with the playbook.

Sunday afternoon will say whether that was the right read.

101 starts, and a phone that rings fast

Humphries is no scrub. Arizona took him in the first round in 2015. He made the Pro Bowl with the Cardinals in 2021. He has played 108 games and started 101 of them.

The last two years have been a slide. Arizona from 2016 through 2023, then Kansas City in 2024, then the Los Angeles Rams in 2025. A different team every season now.

So he is back on the market three days before Week 1. Offensive lines break down fast in this league, and a tackle with 101 starts on his ledger rarely stays unemployed for long. The only question is who calls first.
