Seventy-seven points, and it was settled by the second quarter
Miami scored 21 points in the first quarter at Hard Rock Stadium on Thursday night. They added 28 in the second and 28 more in the third. Florida A&M managed seven all evening. The No. 7 Hurricanes won 77-7 and had the starters watching long before the fourth quarter.
The yardage says more than the scoreboard does. Miami finished with 854 total yards at 11.7 per play. Numbers like that usually come from two or three long runs and nothing else around them. This one came from everywhere on the field.
Darian Mensah completed 14 of his 15 passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns, then handed the offense over and sat down.

The ground game finished the job
Javian Mallory carried 10 times for 142 yards and two scores, one of them a 52-yard sprint. Mark Fletcher Jr. needed seven carries to gain 105 yards and add two touchdowns of his own. Between them that is 17 carries for 247 yards, which works out to more than 14 yards every time either back touched the ball.
Malachi Toney caught four passes for 96 yards and a touchdown before the game stopped resembling a contest. Florida A&M, an FCS program, lost the line of scrimmage early and never won it back.
What it proves
Not a great deal on its own. Miami opened the season by taking Stanford apart, and this was the second blowout in as many outings against opposition that was never built to hold them. The Hurricanes have scored 122 points in two games and conceded 13.
The ACC schedule will ask sharper questions than this. Thursday was a warm-up with a scoreline attached to it.
