Jobe Bellingham in contention for a first England call-up under Thomas Tuchel

Football: Jobe Bellingham pushes into England contention

Tuchel’s staff have been watching Dortmund

Jobe Bellingham has moved onto England’s radar. Members of Thomas Tuchel’s staff rate the Borussia Dortmund midfielder highly enough that a first senior call-up is now in play, TEAMtalk reported this morning, and he is one of three young players pressing their case.

England report back for the first time since their World Cup exit. Tuchel takes his squad into four Nations League fixtures across the next month, starting with world champions Spain at Wembley on September 26 and closing with Czechia at home on October 6. Away trips to Croatia and Czechia fall in between. That volume of football gives a manager room to test people.

Tuchel intends to use it. Several players from the pre-World Cup camp keep their places, but the wider squad is being reshaped. Alex Scott of Bournemouth and Fulham’s Josh King impressed in that camp and remain in contention alongside Bellingham. No final decision has been taken on any of the three.

Sunderland to a Bundesliga starter

The 20-year-old struggled through his opening months in Germany after leaving Sunderland. He finished last season strongly, and he has carried that into this campaign in midfield alongside Felix Nmecha.

Manchester United noticed. Their recruitment staff monitored Bellingham over the summer and considered a move before settling on Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos instead. England scouts tracked the same improvement and reached a warmer conclusion.

Two brothers, one squad

Bellingham has worn the England shirt at youth level and sits in the Under-21 setup. His brother Jude took a faster route, through Dortmund to Real Madrid and into the senior side as one of its central figures. Jobe went to the same club and arrived at the same question by a slower road.

Tuchel wants versatility as he refreshes the group, and that is part of what has caught the eye. Four matches, a manager rebuilding after a tournament that ended badly, and a midfielder in form. The pieces are lined up. Whether Tuchel moves them is a decision for the coming weeks.
