The same finish, twice
Daniel Gazdag scored twice at Citi Field on this night. Only one of them counted.
The first came from an Ilay Feingold cross. The ball bounced off Thiago Martins, who tried to play it back to Matt Freese. The keeper came out, the ball slipped between them, and Gazdag rolled it into the empty net. VAR wiped it out for offside.
A few moments later, Feingold whipped in another long cross. This time, the Hungarian set himself at the edge of the box. Freese dived. Too late. 2-1 to New England in the third minute of stoppage time.
It was Gazdag’s first goal since joining the Revolution.

NYCFC dominated and still lost
The hosts had the ball for most of the match. They only found a way through in the 71st minute.
The move was worth the telling. Nicolas Fernandez-Mercau worked near the box and fed Hannes Wolf on the left. Wolf crossed, Brooklyn Raines controlled for New England. Fernandez-Mercau nicked it back off his feet and slipped in Luighi perfectly, and he beat Matt Turner.
It was the Brazilian’s third MLS goal in six matches.
Before that, New England had led since the 12th minute. A handball in the NYCFC box, a penalty, Carles Gil. Gil had already been denied from the spot by Freese in the last meeting between the two clubs, on 23 August.
Seventeen days later
That 23 August meeting ended 1-1. New England just about avoided the same script, seventeen days on.
The Revolution move on to 40 points, with 12 wins, 8 defeats and 4 draws. NYCFC stay stuck on 29 points, with 7 victories, 9 losses and 8 ties.
There are now 11 points between the two sides after a match settled by a stoppage-time strike.
