The word he used was “breached”
Rory McIlroy did not soften it. Asked on Wednesday about LIV Golf’s bankruptcy filing, the world No. 2 pointed straight at what it means for the players still tied to the league.
“I’m not trying to predict the future but I would predict that you’ll see some guys leave, as they are free to now as, I guess, contracts have been breached by them filing for bankruptcy,” he said.
That single sentence reframes the situation. LIV’s slide into Chapter 11 is not only a balance-sheet problem. It hands a roster of major winners and world-ranked players a legal way out.

Where those players go next
McIlroy thinks the DP World Tour is the obvious beneficiary. “I’m not in their shoes but LIV at the start looked a lot more attractive than what LIV 2.0 might be from a financial standpoint,” he said.
Whatever LIV officials manage to rebuild, the numbers almost certainly shrink. Guaranteed contracts worth tens of millions and inflated purses were the entire pitch. Strip those out and a tour schedule with real ranking points starts to look better.
“I think that means other tours have decisions to make. And obviously there’s a lot of players on LIV that can strengthen golf tournaments and make them more competitive,” McIlroy said. “So I would see that as a good thing for the DP World Tour. And I think the health of the DP World Tour is in a really good spot.”

A strange week to be the defending champion
McIlroy speaks as the man who won this Irish Open a year ago, but the tournament itself has taken over the news cycle. It is being played at Trump International Golf Links & Hotel Ireland in Doonbeg, County Clare, and President Donald Trump plans to attend.
The 37-year-old has never played the course. He was asked how a presidential visit changes the week.
“I think when the sitting president of the United States of America visits anywhere, it becomes a logistical challenge,” McIlroy said. “They obviously have to lock down a specific area and make sure that it’s safe for him to travel into.”
He then called the extra attention a good thing for the event. Six major titles give a player some latitude in how he answers that one.
