Champions League: Gabriel Jesus still chasing the one that got away

Two finals, no trophy

2021, Porto. Manchester City fall to Chelsea. Gabriel Jesus watches the Champions League slip through his fingers.

Last season, it was the same story with Arsenal. Same stage, same ending.

Two finals. No trophy. At 29, the Brazilian has arrived at FC Barcelona with that obsession still driving him, reports Sport.

“Winning the Champions League has been on my mind ever since I found out I could come to Barca. It’s a dream,” he said at his unveiling. That wasn’t just a nice line for the cameras.

Nine years later, Feyenoord again

26 goals in 57 Champions League matches. On Wednesday, Gabriel Jesus begins his 10th European campaign. That’s a fair old haul.

And the fixture list has a sense of humour. In the other corner: Feyenoord. The side against whom he scored his first goal in the competition, back in 2017, in a Manchester City shirt.

Different shirt, same old frustration.

The queue in front of him has not thinned out

One catch remains. He is not an automatic starter. Hansi Flick is still rotating him with Raphinha at the sharp end of the attack, and nothing suggests the pecking order is set in stone.

Barca haven’t signed him and him alone, either. Anthony Gordon arrives with 10 goals from the last edition in a Newcastle shirt, including five penalties. Karim Adeyemi has 16 goals in 48 Champions League matches for Borussia Dortmund. Rodri only has three, but one of them won Manchester City the trophy in the 2023 final against Inter.

Plenty of bodies in the queue, then, for a striker who hasn’t got time to keep waiting for his turn.
