Ninth name outside the arena
The Lakers will unveil a statue of Phil Jackson outside Crypto.com Arena on April 9 next year. The franchise confirmed the date earlier today.
Jackson becomes the ninth figure from the organisation to get the bronze treatment. He joins Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson and Shaquille O’Neal among the players, Elgin Baylor, Pat Riley and Jerry West among those who played and later ran the club, and broadcaster Chick Hearn. Bryant already has two statues, with a third scheduled for a date the Lakers have not set. Riley was the most recent name added, honoured in February.

Jackson coached Los Angeles from 1999 to 2011, minus the 2004-05 campaign he sat out after falling out with management. Those eleven seasons on the bench produced five championships and seven trips to the Finals. The Lakers reached the playoffs in every single one of them.
He arrived in Los Angeles with a resume already built in Chicago, where he spent nine years from 1989 to 1998 and collected six titles. Six plus five leaves him on eleven rings as a head coach, a mark nobody in the league has matched. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inducted him in 2007.
