Greenberg pulls out of the race
The Red Wings lost a candidate during the day. According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, Jeff Greenberg has withdrawn his application for the general manager job. He remains with the Detroit Tigers in MLB, where he holds the same role.
Detroit has been hunting for a GM since Steve Yzerman stepped away. Seven seasons on the bench, no playoff berth, and a rebuild that never really got off the ground. The chair has been empty ever since.
The clock, meanwhile, keeps ticking. Training camp opens next week.

Horcoff, the internal option
Ansar Khan of MLive has put forward Shawn Horcoff’s name. The assistant knows the place. Three years as assistant general manager, a stint as GM of the Grand Rapids AHL affiliate, and daily work alongside Yzerman and Kris Draper on all hockey matters.
Khan even suggests an interim appointment, just to buy time while Detroit finds something better. A stopgap, sure, but one that would at least clear up two pressing issues.
The first is Dylan Larkin and his status on the trade market. The second is even more urgent.
The Edvinsson case is getting expensive
Simon Edvinsson, 23, is coming off his entry-level deal and waiting on a new one. The Swedish defenseman put up 31 points in 78 games in 2024-25, then added 25 points in 72 outings last season.
His price has just gone up. The Canucks gave Zeev Buium an eight-year extension at an annual average of $9.38 million. Max Smith of Detroit Hockey Now believes Edvinsson is now in a position to ask for more, over a shorter term. $10 million a year is no longer a wild number.
A four-year deal would take him straight to unrestricted free agency at the peak of his career. That’s exactly the sort of negotiation you don’t hand to an interim. Detroit, though, will have to make a call fast.
