Three weeks of waiting, one coach quote
On August 17, Breece Hall picked up a groin injury in a routine camp drill. Since then, the Jets have been holding their breath.
On Tuesday, Aaron Glenn said what everyone had been waiting to hear. His running back is “on track to play” Sunday at Tennessee in the season opener. “He’ll practice this week,” the coach added.
That is not a guarantee. But it is a decent sign. A groin problem in this sport can hang around for months.
Try it for $0.99.
A contract that hangs over the season
Hall, 25, signed a three-year, $45.75 million extension in May. The Jets are not paying that kind of money for a player to watch games in sweats.
The deal came after his best rushing season yet, with 1,065 yards in 2025. Across four years, he has 3,398 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns, plus 188 catches for 1,642 yards and nine touchdowns in 56 games, including 50 starts.
A complete player, then. The kind who can hurt you out of the backfield just as much as he can between the tackles. New York has built its offense around that.
A season opener that has a bit of edge to it
The Jets open at Tennessee. On the other sideline, Robert Saleh. Yes, the same Robert Saleh who ran New York from 2021 to 2024 before getting the boot.
His first season in Tennessee, first week against his old team. The schedule does not lack a sense of irony.
Now it is just a question of what shape Hall is in by Sunday. Three weeks without contact usually costs you when the real hits start flying. The Jets, though, do not have much choice.
