Football: Bordeaux squad breaks its silence over club’s collapse

Six league titles, and a dressing room with nowhere to train

Girondins de Bordeaux were in Ligue 1 four seasons ago. On Tuesday evening their professional squad put out a statement through the UNFP, the French players’ union, aimed squarely at the board and at owner Gerard Lopez.

The tone is not diplomatic. They want answers, and they want them now.

“We have no visibility left: no group training, no sporting plan, and the feeling of being left to fend for ourselves,” the statement reads. The players say they are no longer treated as employees of the club at all.

3 September was the day it stopped being fixable

The FFF’s Comex issued its final ruling on 3 September. The federation backed the DNCG sanction. A reprieve into National 2 was refused. Bordeaux go down to Regional 1.

Two days after that, the buyers vanished. Sparta Capital and Park Bench confirmed they were walking away from the takeover.

The commercial court in Bordeaux granted one more extension. Per the players’ statement, nothing decisive lands this week or next. Liquidation remains on the table.

Careers on hold while the clock runs

Every league in the country is already playing, Regional 1 included. The squad says several of them turned down moves elsewhere to stick with the project here.

Months have gone by with no collective sessions. The transfer window in the big European leagues shut in early September. Each week that passes closes another door.

The club was founded in 1881. Six French league titles sit in the cabinet.
