Ligue 2: Dunkerque agree terms with M’Baye Niang

Dunkerque are not slowing down

Steven N’Zonzi this summer. M’Baye Niang now. Dunkerque clearly do not plan on making up the numbers in Ligue 2.

The northern club have reached a verbal agreement with the Senegalese striker, according to L’Equipe: a one-year deal with a further season as an option. Nothing is signed. Both sides, though, are understood to be on the same page.

Niang is 31. And he needs a home.

Four goals in Turkey, and a market that noticed

Genclerbirligi, four goals in 26 league games. That is a thin return. Thin enough for a Ligue 2 club to fancy its chances of getting him cheaply.

He has not played in France for three years, his last stop there being AJ Auxerre. Rennes, Torino and Caen came before that. And AC Milan right at the beginning, back when the promises were much bigger.

Country to country, club to club. He has never really settled anywhere.

The northern gamble

Dunkerque need goals and are working the free-agent market. Niang ticks boxes: experience, a name supporters recognise, no fee to pay.

The question is fitness. A striker without a club takes weeks to get sharp, sometimes longer, and Ligue 2 does not wait around for anyone.

Dunkerque have decided the risk is worth taking.
