Seven years, then six days’ notice
The New York Giants released Darius Slayton on Monday. He was the longest-tenured player on the roster, and the season opener against Dallas is Sunday.
Slayton posted on X soon after. “Grateful for my time in NY,” he wrote. “7 years a Giant nothing but love for one of the most prestigious organizations in the NFL. Excited to see what’s next.”
He arrived as a fifth-round pick in 2019 and outlasted three head coaches. Pat Shurmur drafted him. Joe Judge and Brian Daboll kept playing him. He started 78 of his 106 games in blue.

The money made the call easy
Slayton signed a three-year, $36 million deal last year. Cutting him now clears $2.5 million, according to reports. That is a modest saving for a receiver who has caught 296 passes for 4,435 yards and 22 touchdowns in the NFL, every one of them for the same franchise.
Production had slipped. He played 14 games last season, started 12, and finished with 37 catches for 538 yards and a single touchdown. Those are fourth-option numbers on a roster that spent the offseason stacking options.
Days ago Slayton spoke to the Trentonian about the new regime and sounded like a man planning to be part of it.
“I think we’ve been well-prepared,” he said. “I think we’ve been well-acclimated, conditioned to be able to play football. And I think our mindset and the mentality that we’ve kind of adopted from Coach (Harbaugh), I think he’s done a good job of having his imprint on this team. And I think that’ll show during the season.”

John Harbaugh now opens his Giants tenure with a thin room. Malik Nabers heads it in his third year. Darnell Mooney arrived in free agency. Malachi Fields is a third-round rookie. Odell Beckham Jr. is back where his career started.
