Two concussions in a month, and a series in the Bronx waiting
The Colorado Rockies activated Kyle Karros on Monday. The third baseman is back from his second stint on the concussion injured list. The timing matters: Colorado open a series Tuesday in New York against the Yankees.
It’s been dragging on for a month. Karros took the initial hit on August 11, colliding with shortstop Ezequiel Tovar against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He returned on August 21. Two games later, he was right back on the shelf. Manager Warren Schaeffer later said he had been dealing with concussion-like symptoms.
The 24-year-old cleared the protocol a second time last week. He logged four rehab games in Double-A Hartford, going 6-for-15 with a home run. To make room, the Rockies sent Ryan Ritter back to Triple-A Albuquerque.

A .360 on-base percentage, then the brakes
The injury slammed the brakes on what had been a promising year. Before August 11, Karros had become a steady presence in Colorado’s lineup. His 2026 numbers tell the story: .263 batting average, .360 on-base percentage, 10 home runs and 44 RBIs in 114 games.
That .360 OBP sits well above league average. Across his career, which began in August 2025, he owns a .253 average, 11 home runs and 53 RBIs in 157 games. Almost all of that production came in this one season.
The name should ring a bell. Kyle Karros is the son of Eric Karros, the former Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman and 1992 National League Rookie of the Year.
Nothing to play for, everything to protect
Ritter leaves a hole that is easy to fill. The 25-year-old hit .158 with one RBI in 16 major league games this season. Over two seasons, he’s at .233 with one home run and 19 RBIs in 76 appearances.
Colorado have nothing left to play for in September. But the club want Karros to finish the season on the field, giving them something to build around next year. Two concussions in a month raise real questions about how they handle him from here, and the staff will have to be careful with his workload through the end of the schedule.
