Thirty-six games, then two in an afternoon
Tyrick Mitchell had gone 36 Premier League appearances without scoring. On a weekend when Thomas Tuchel was in the stands, the Crystal Palace left-back scored the first brace of his professional career, at any level, in any competition.
The scale of that is easy to miss. Mitchell is a long-serving Premier League full-back who has spent most of his career contributing almost nothing to the scoresheet. He already has more league goals this season than he managed across the whole of the previous two combined.
The second was not the work of a finisher. A shot deflected, bounced kindly and went in. Nobody in the ground would have called it a goal until it crossed the line. Palace took the points, and the man who scored the winner late on was Ben Chilwell, another left-back whose England career has been stuck in neutral for years.

What Tuchel actually needs
Mitchell owns two England caps. Both came in 2022, under a different manager, in a different cycle. Tuchel has generally preferred left-sided defenders who defend before they attack, which has never been the strongest part of Mitchell’s game.
The problem is that England ran short in that position at the World Cup whenever Nico O’Reilly was unavailable. There is no queue of natural left-backs waiting behind him, and there has not been one for some time. Squads get picked from what exists, not from what a coach would design.
Not a case, but a reminder
One afternoon does not rebuild an international career. Mitchell remains what he has always been: durable, hard-running, technically sound, and rarely the reason anyone talks about a Palace performance. That is precisely why the brace matters. It put a name back in front of the selector at a moment when the alternatives are thin.
Tuchel came to watch somebody. He may not have expected to leave thinking about a full-back who had not troubled a Premier League scoresheet in 36 attempts.
