Champions League: Fenerbahce appeal Guendouzi’s four-game ban

Turkish club refuses to accept the ruling

Four matches. 50,000 euros. That is the punishment UEFA handed Mattéo Guendouzi last Friday.

Fenerbahce were not exactly grateful. The club has lodged an appeal with the European governing body’s appeals commission, according to Turkish outlet FotoMaç on Monday. The aim is clear: knock part of the ban down.

The case goes back to the Champions League qualifying round. Second leg at Groupama Stadium, against Lyon. The stands were bouncing, abuse was aimed at the French midfielder, and the player hit back. UEFA sanctioned both clubs after the trouble, then dealt with Guendouzi’s case separately.

Two games now, two hanging over him

The fine print matters. “The suspension for two of these matches is subject to a probationary period of one year, starting from the date of this decision,” UEFA said.

In plain English: two games served immediately, two more waiting on him for the next 12 months if he steps out of line. Guendouzi will miss the home games against AS Roma and Aston Villa in the league phase.

For a club that built its summer around Europe, that is a real blow. The 27-year-old has already played 10 times this season for Fenerbahce. He is one of the key men in the side.

What happens next is up to UEFA

So the question is simple. Will the body stand firm, or will it cut the ban?

Appeals like this rarely wipe the slate clean. A reduction is still on the table. Fenerbahce are fighting for fixtures as much as principle: every league-phase match counts twice over in a 36-team format where a few points decide qualification.

Guendouzi waits. And Fenerbahce head into their European campaign not knowing exactly who will be available when it begins.
