Two outs, one swing
Will Dion had two outs and a one-run lead. Then he threw Mookie Betts a fastball on 1-0.
Betts put it into the left field seats for a three-run homer in the eighth inning, and the Los Angeles Dodgers turned a 5-4 deficit into a 7-5 win over the Washington Nationals overnight at Dodger Stadium. It was his 18th home run of the season, and he drove in four of the seven runs.
The win was the Dodgers’ fourth in a row. At 86-57 they sit a game and a half behind the Milwaukee Brewers for the best record in the major leagues, and they closed out the season series against Washington at 6-0.

A messy middle
Los Angeles opened the scoring in the third. Max Muncy doubled, moved to third on a Tommy Edman infield single and came home on a Betts groundout.
Washington answered with a four-run fourth that started badly for Justin Wrobleski and got worse. CJ Abrams led off with a home run, his 30th of the year and the first time in his career he has reached that number. Brady House and Daylen Lile singled, Harry Ford doubled them both in, and Jacob Young added a run-scoring single. The first five hitters of the inning reached base.
The Dodgers clawed back level in the fifth on Edman’s RBI double and singles from Will Smith and Teoscar Hernandez. Washington edged in front again in the sixth when Dylan Crews took a Bobby Miller curveball with the bases loaded.
Miller’s first day back
Miller worked three innings for the win in his season debut, and Edgardo Henriquez closed it out for his second save. Muncy finished with three hits and two runs scored a day after sitting out with an illness. Edman had two hits and scored twice, batting leadoff for a fourth straight game.
That leadoff job exists because Shohei Ohtani missed a fourth consecutive game with discomfort in his left knee and right biceps.
Washington keep sliding
Andrew Alvarez started for the Nationals and gave up three runs on four hits across four and a third innings, pitching 25 miles from Los Alamitos, where he grew up. Dion took the loss after two innings of relief. Washington drop to 67-78 and have now lost four in a row.
