MLB: Mariners shut down Matt Brash for the season

Sixteen and two-thirds innings, and the season is gone

That is the whole of Matt Brash’s 2026. Seattle shut the right-hander down on Friday after an MRI taken the previous day found more inflammation in his right latissimus dorsi. Nothing structural. Nothing torn. Just a muscle that will not settle down, and an eight-week timeline that swallows whatever was left of the calendar.

General manager Justin Hollander did not dress it up. “He is going to be shut down for eight weeks. So obviously, that is his season,” he said. September is already here. Eight weeks from Friday runs well past the postseason.

What stings for the Mariners is how little anyone can explain. “We do not really know what is causing it right now. He just needs more rest,” Hollander said. Brash had been climbing through a throwing program, felt good early, then stalled out. The discomfort turned up again during a bullpen session in Boston, right at the point where a September return looked plausible.

A 0.54 ERA that nobody got to use

Twenty appearances. One earned run all year. Fifteen strikeouts in 16 and two-thirds innings. On paper Brash was untouchable in 2026, and in practice Seattle barely had him.

The stop-start pattern set in early. He landed on the 15-day injured list on May 1 with the same lat inflammation, came back for a short run, then went back down on June 10 and never really left.

Two years, two different parts of the arm giving out

Brash missed all of 2024 after Tommy John surgery. The elbow held up this time. Something else did not.

Across four big-league seasons the 28-year-old has 190 appearances, a 3.06 ERA, eight saves and 242 strikeouts in 185 and one-third innings, close to 11.8 per nine. Seattle built its late innings around that kind of swing-and-miss stuff. It has gotten it in fragments.
