A number that stays on the field a little longer
Seven. That is how many Mountaineers have had their number pulled from circulation in program history, and Pat White joined the list on Saturday. The ceremony came before West Virginia’s season opener against Coastal Carolina.
The jersey is not going into a display case just yet. White’s No. 5 stays in play until the end of the season, letting senior Jaden Bray finish his college career wearing it.
West Virginia went all-white for the occasion and asked the crowd to do the same.

Four bowls, four wins
White is 40 now. He put Morgantown on the map from 2005 to 2008 with a run nobody had matched before him.
Sugar Bowl 2006 against Georgia. Gator Bowl 2007 against Georgia Tech. Fiesta Bowl 2008 against Oklahoma. Meineke Bowl 2008 against North Carolina. Four bowl starts, four wins.
Per the school’s sports information department, no college quarterback before him had started and won four bowl games.
His record as a starter came out at 35-8. Against ranked opponents he went 7-2.
Records that still stand
White left college owning the Big East marks for touchdowns responsible for, 103, and total yards, 10,529.
He still sits third all-time in rushing yards by a college quarterback with 4,480. Only Keenan Reynolds, who finished at Navy with 4,559, and Michigan’s Denard Robinson, with 4,495, rank ahead of him.
The professional chapter got messy. Miami took him in the second round of the 2009 draft and cut him the following season. White landed with the Virginia Destroyers in the UFL, resurfaced as a backup in Washington, then wound up in Edmonton in the CFL.
He retired in 2015 and moved into coaching. These days he is an assistant quarterbacks coach at West Virginia, working under Rich Rodriguez, the man who recruited and coached him.
