NFL: Browns tackle Tytus Howard fined for preseason trip

The NFL fined Cleveland right tackle Tytus Howard $12,537 on Saturday. The offence dates back three weeks, to a 15-yard tripping penalty in the first quarter of the Browns’ preseason opener at Chicago on August 15.

Money collected from player fines does not stay with the league. It goes to the Professional Athletes Foundation and the NFL Foundation.

The player Cleveland paid a lot to get

Howard cost the Browns a 2026 fifth-round pick when they prised him away from Houston on March 11. He cost them considerably more once the trade cleared, signing a two-year extension worth $45 million.

He brought a durability record that explains the outlay. Houston drafted him in the first round in 2019, and he started all 93 games he played for them between 2019 and 2025. Cleveland have installed him at right tackle at 30, the age at which offensive linemen either hold their level or drop off in a hurry.

A five-figure fine set against a $45 million contract barely registers. What matters more to Cleveland is that the flag came from a player they expect to start every week on the right side.
