Premier League: Richard Hughes quits Liverpool for Al Hilal

Gone a week after the window shut

Liverpool have confirmed that Richard Hughes is leaving. The sporting director walks away after a little over two years at Anfield, with Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia the expected destination.

The decision was his. Hughes went to the club’s hierarchy and told them he wanted something new, and the official statement followed shortly afterwards.

“It has been a huge privilege to have had the chance to serve this incredible and unique institution,” he said.

A 20th title on his watch

Hughes joined from Bournemouth in June 2024, running football operations and recruitment.

Liverpool won their 20th English league title in 2024-25 under that structure, then locked down Champions League football for next season. Whatever else is said about his spell, that is the record.

Fenway Sports Group chairman Mike Gordon was warm about it. “Richard joined us at the start of a period of change, taking on that responsibility by leading our football operations department and overseeing recruitment,” he said.

The next one inherits a squad already built

The search for a replacement is under way, according to the club, with an announcement to come.

Odd timing, though. The summer market closed days ago, several deals went through including Bradley Barcola, who has already featured at Ipswich, and the season is running. Whoever takes the job walks into a squad someone else assembled.

Hughes says he will keep following Liverpool “with a great deal of affection” and wishes the club “nothing but success”.
