La Liga: a new rule says Mbappe’s penalty should have been retaken

A foot in the air, and the whole night turns

The rule changed this season and almost nobody registered it. On Friday night it may have decided a game.

Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid lost 1-0 at Real Betis. Late on, Kylian Mbappe put the ball on the spot and missed.

El Partidazo de COPE says he should have had another go at it.

The change nobody was watching for

“Kylian Mbappe’s penalty should have been retaken. The rule changed this season: if a player’s foot is in the air and inside the penalty area, it counts as an encroachment into the box,” the Spanish outlet explained.

The referee talked to his assistants for a long stretch. The stoppage dragged. No retake came.

Madrid got a corner out of it. Then nothing, and a trip home with no points.

The kind of night that follows a player around

The penalty was not the only problem. Mbappe was scrappy all evening, on the ball and off it, and he had already passed up chances before that one.

Then the Betis goalkeeper walked over and mocked him, right there, seconds after the miss.

Points gone this early in the season, and another refereeing argument to carry into the week.
