Who follows Messi
Lionel Messi is done with international football, which left Argentina with a vacancy nobody envied. The Argentine press says it has been filled: Cristian Romero.
He is 28, and across the last few campaigns he has become one of Lionel Scaloni’s most trusted players.
The federation has not confirmed anything yet. For now this is local media reporting.

Loud, and that is the point
Romero has never done quiet. That edge is exactly why he works as the coach’s voice inside the dressing room.
He signed for Atletico Madrid this summer, so a new club chapter and a new national-team status arrive at once. Diego Simeone built his back line around him. Scaloni is handing him the squad.
The CV holds up. World Cup winner, Copa America winner, a defender who has felt what the shirt asks for when a tournament tightens.
Following a benchmark nobody can match
Under Messi, Argentina won two Copa America titles and a World Cup. Anyone picking up that baton starts at an impossible measuring stick.
The last World Cup finished in a final defeat to Spain. Romero takes a squad at a turning point, one that has to work out who it is without the player who defined it.
