Jalon Daniels left, and nobody noticed
Kansas spent the offseason fielding questions about life after Jalon Daniels, who moved on to the NFL. Isaiah Marshall answered most of them inside a half. The new starter completed 14 of 19 passes for 248 yards and two touchdowns as the Jayhawks buried Long Island University 51-6 on Friday night in Lawrence.
Nik McMillan, a transfer from Buffalo, caught six passes for 130 yards and a score in his Kansas debut. Yasin Willis ran for 72 yards and two touchdowns, both inside a first half that closed at 30-0. Tate Nagy added a receiving touchdown, and Jalen Dupree, Micah Johnson and Donald Collier each ran one in.

613 yards against 146
The gap in the box score ran wider than the scoreboard. Kansas outgained the Sharks 613-146 and collected 29 first downs to 11. Luca Stanzani went 10 of 19 for 111 yards and also led Long Island in rushing with 20 yards on 12 carries, which covers most of what needs saying about the visitors’ evening.
Nagy’s touchdown arrived through a deflection. Long Island’s Jackson Barry got a hand to Marshall’s throw, the ball climbed, and Nagy tracked it down deep in the end zone. That capped a 15-play, 72-yard drive to open the second half, after which the Kansas starters largely watched from the sideline.
The shutout that got away
Will Johnson kicked two 39-yard field goals in the fourth quarter, the first with 10:09 left. Kansas have not shut anyone out since a 29-0 win over Louisiana Tech in 2008, and that drought survives another week.
Long Island have now conceded 93 points in two outings, having lost 42-21 at North Dakota on Aug. 27. Kansas open at 1-0 with a quarterback who looked settled from the opening drive, which is the only real information Friday produced.
