Every touchdown pass travelled at least 34 yards
That detail says more than the final score. John Mateer threw three, all of them deep, on 11 completions from 17 attempts for 225 yards as No. 10 Oklahoma opened with a 51-0 win over UTEP in Norman.
The offseason was built around exactly this. Oklahoma made the College Football Playoff last season with an attack that spent long stretches stuck in neutral. Three transfer additions scored in this first outing, two of them inside the opening quarter.

An 88-yard punt return, six minutes in
The first two snaps of the game both went for more than 10 yards on the ground. Twelve plays and 76 yards later, Lloyd Avant, in from Colorado State, punched it in from a yard out. The defense forced a three-and-out. Isaiah Sategna III took the punt back 88 yards.
Rocky Beers, another Colorado State import, leapt over a safety near the goal line to finish a 40-yard catch. UTEP missed two field goals before the break. Tate Sandell, last year’s Lou Groza Award winner, converted twice in the second quarter. 27-0 at half-time.
The third quarter closed it out. Peyton Bowen ripped the ball loose from Tavorus Jones and Taylor Wein fell on it at the UTEP 34. Two plays later Mateer found Sategna from 34 yards. Then came Trell Harris, over from Virginia, on a 48-yard score.

The yardage gap is the night in one line. Sategna, Oklahoma’s leading receiver a year ago, ended with four catches for 76 yards.
UTEP got one late look after an Oklahoma turnover at its own 18 in the fourth. Carlos Arreola missed his third field goal of the evening. Backup quarterback Raymond Moore III led the Miners in rushing with 49 yards, while starter EJ Colson Jr. finished with 52 through the air and 25 on the ground.
