MLB: Athletics go deep four times in one inning to sink Seattle

Four homers, one inning, five runs

The third inning settled it. Max Muncy, Alika Williams, Jeff McNeil and Zack Gelof all took Seattle deep in the same frame, five runs came across, and a 2-0 Mariners lead turned into a 4-2 deficit before anyone in T-Mobile Park had settled back into their seat. The Athletics won 7-6.

Three of the four barely got out, landing between roughly 348 and 361 feet. Gelof’s went about 397 and cleared the visiting bullpen. That is a stretch most lineups never string together in a full season, let alone a club sitting at 56-86.

Logan Gilbert struck out 10 and still lost the night

The Mariners starter (11-9) had faced the minimum through two, even picking McNeil off first after a single. Then the third happened. Seven runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings, all four homers off his arm.

He also became the seventh pitcher in franchise history to reach 1,000 innings for Seattle, recorded on the first out of the fifth. The milestone goes in the record books. So does the line score.

Brady Basso (1-2) gave the Athletics three scoreless innings out of the bullpen and Hogan Harris closed the ninth for his 15th save. Third straight win for the visitors, second in this four-game set between AL West rivals.

Twenty games left and seven back

Seattle kept swinging. Cal Raleigh answered with a homer of his own in the third. Gelof restored the cushion with an RBI triple in the fifth, followed by a Lawrence Butler single. Raleigh pulled the Mariners back within one in the eighth on a ground-rule double, with Josh Naylor singling behind him.

None of it moved the standings. At 66-76, Seattle sit seven games behind Houston in the division and six out of the third wild card with 20 to play. The evening also cost them rookie Lazaro Montes, who left with a left hip injury after hitting the wall chasing Gelof’s triple.
