Eleven assists, and a record that stood for four years
Caitlin Clark needed one game at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup to rewrite the American record book. She finished today’s 94-61 group win over China with 11 assists, the most any United States player has recorded in a single game at the tournament.
The mark she broke belonged to Alyssa Thomas, who had nine against Belgium in 2022. Clark cleared it comfortably and finished three short of the outright tournament record, the 13 Julie Allemand produced for Belgium in 2018.
Context matters with numbers like this. Only eight players in the history of the Women’s World Cup have reached 11 assists in a game. The only other American on that list is Dawn Staley, who had 12 against Russia in 1998. Before today, the most recent to manage it was Emma Meesseman, with 11 against Puerto Rico four years ago.

She started passing before she had warmed up
Clark came off the bench and set up baskets for Rhyne Howard and Jackie Young inside her first two minutes on the floor. By the end, all 12 American players had scored, which is the clearest evidence of what her presence does to a rotation.
She was named Player of the Game with 14 points on 4-of-9 shooting, 3-of-7 from three, three rebounds and no turnovers. Eleven assists and a clean sheet on giveaways is a rare combination at this level.
Asked afterwards what she is looking for when she checks in, Clark said her job is to “facilitate, play fast, set up my teammates.”
What the numbers say about the rest of the tournament
None of this arrives out of nowhere. Clark averaged 8.4 assists per game for the Indiana Fever this season, tied with Thomas for the WNBA lead. She also led the league at 8.4 as a rookie, and her career mark of 8.5 per game is the best among active WNBA players.
The Americans return to group action on Sunday against Italy, then close against Czechia on Monday. Finishing top of the group carries a concrete reward at this World Cup: no qualification play-off, and a direct route into the quarter-finals in Berlin.
