Football: Gboho swaps Toulouse for Coventry in a late Championship move

Signed three days after France shut up shop

Fifteen million euros. That was the number Toulouse hung on Yann Gboho all summer, and for most of the window it kept buyers at arm’s length. Coventry City eventually blinked, agreeing terms in the closing hours of the English market, and the move was made official on Friday.

France’s window had already been shut for three days by then. Paperwork ran late, which is why the attacking midfielder looked, right up until the end, like a player staying in Haute-Garonne until at least January.

Reported fees range from 15 to 20 million euros depending on who you ask.

TFC lose the one player who could unlock a game

The timing stings. Toulouse have lost twice in a row in Ligue 1, most recently at home to Lille on Thursday night, beaten 1-0 to open matchday three.

They were not poor against LOSC. They had the ball, they had territory, and they had nothing at all in the final third. Gboho was the squad’s most direct answer to precisely that.

Mathis Amougou came in on loan this summer, which softens the blow a little. It does not replace what has just walked out, and there is no market to fix it until the winter.

Forty-six games and a very different kind of football

Coventry sit in the Championship, one rung below the Premier League, and the Midlands club has been throwing money at attacking players for several seasons in pursuit of promotion.

Gboho has never played outside France. He is walking into a 46-game league season, cup ties on top, played at a tempo and a physicality that has swallowed better-regarded imports than him. Whether the technique survives the schedule is the whole question.
