Premier League: Richarlison frozen out of Tottenham’s squad by De Zerbi

Valued at 35 million a fortnight ago

Thirty-five million pounds two weeks ago. Nothing today.

Richarlison has been left out of Tottenham’s Premier League squad, the Daily Mail reports, and the call came from Roberto De Zerbi. The Brazilian is 29 and fit. That last detail is what makes this sting.

Spurs kept injured players on the list. Xavi Simons, Dejan Kulusevski, Wilson Odobert, none of whom will kick a ball for weeks. Richarlison could play tomorrow. He was picked out anyway.

De Zerbi ran out of patience weeks ago

This was not a snap decision taken in temper. The Italian had already told Richarlison he was out of his plans before the English window shut, and had already left him at home for the Newcastle game. The grievance is straightforward. The forward kept asking to leave.

Everton was the obvious destination. Tottenham even used his name in negotiations around Iliman Ndiaye, putting a 35 million pound tag on him. Ndiaye signed for Manchester City instead. The whole thing fell apart.

Four years on from his 2022 arrival from Goodison, Richarlison has never repaid the fee, occasional flashes aside. He did drag Spurs out of a hole at Anfield last season.

He answered publicly. “I am the villain in many badly told stories.” Then, less diplomatically: “My intention was indeed to go back to where I was very happy.” He added that he was still available to the club.

Turkey shuts tonight

Trabzonspor are the last route out. The Turkish side, who already have Mohamed Salah and Fabinho in the building, have moved for him, and Turkish reports say personal terms are agreed. Clubs are the problem. There is still no agreement on a fee, and Tottenham insist nothing acceptable has landed on the desk.

The Turkish window closes on Friday.

Richarlison has a year left on his deal plus an option for another. Miss tonight’s deadline and he trains alone through autumn and winter, no competitive minutes, no shop window. At 29, that is an expensive way to sit still.
