The clock hits 10 and everything stops
The Argentine Football Association has picked its moment carefully. Ole reports that every match in the coming round will be halted in the 10th minute of the first half, followed by a minute of applause.
The number is the whole point. Lionel Messi wore 10 for the Albiceleste for two decades.
Nothing has been left out of the plan either. Every age group, every discipline under the AFA umbrella, men’s and women’s. Eleven-a-side, futsal, beach soccer, all of it stops at the same minute.

All of this follows Monday’s announcement. Messi, 39, has closed his international career 21 years after his first Argentina cap in 2005. Very few footballers get to measure their national team service in decades.

The football question is uglier and it starts now. Argentina have to build something without him, and the argument over who takes the number 10 is already running hot on the other side of the Atlantic.
