Bundesliga: Stuttgart send Bouanani on loan to Rangers

Fourteen appearances, nearly all of them from the bench

That was Badredine Bouanani’s first year in Germany. Fourteen games, most of them scraps at the end. At 21, a season like that does not build anything.

So he is leaving. Foot Mercato reports the winger is joining Glasgow Rangers on loan from Stuttgart, with an option to buy written into the agreement. The Scottish club have not put out a statement yet.

Strasbourg looked, then backed off

He had other options. Strasbourg ran the rule over the Algeria international this summer, drawn by what he had shown at Nice, and got no further than that. Scotland moved and France did not.

The fit is reasonable enough. Rangers can hand a 21-year-old winger weekly minutes, which is precisely what Stuttgart could not. The Scottish league is a softer competition week to week, but the club plays in Europe and the crowd at Ibrox has never been forgiving, so nobody hides there for long.

The buy option covers everyone. Stuttgart keep a way out if the loan goes flat. Rangers keep the player if he takes off. The variable that decides all of it is how much football his new manager actually gives him, and that will be clear by November.
